Shodō: The Mindful Art + Zen Philosophy of Japanese Calligraphy
About the event
Existing at a time when the world seems to move at break neck speed, the art of Japanese calligraphy offers valuable lessons in intentional and mindful living. This 2,000-year-old art form offers us the possibility of harmonious connection between creativity and finding our “無心 mushin,” a flow state of absolute presence.
During this session we’ll learn about the Zen philosophy informing the practice, before embarking on a collective journey to create our own Japanese calligraphy pieces.
Things to prepare for this session:
-Pen/brush: Any brush or pen that you have at home will work.
-Paper (preferable size A4 to A5): While traditional calligraphy uses white paper, if you feel compelled to write on colourful paper, please feel free to do so. We recommend having a couple of pieces of paper as we will first take time to practice and then write one final piece.
Led by Saori Okada who has over 25 years of experience with this art form, Shodō is a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of art, wellness, and a medium for exploring mindfulness.
