Why Feeling Lost is Essential for Growth
Show me someone who’s never felt lost and I’ll give you a million quid!
Feeling lost is a valuable and universal human experience but it’s also one that we just ourselves very harshly for. Our society values control, certainty and direction so it can be incredibly hard when we feel adrift.
The good news is that feeling lost is actually an important part of our self-development…
Do you feel lost and alone? Are you confused about where your life is going? Are you in the middle of a ‘plot twist’ moment that’s left you questioning everything about yourself?
Did you know that feeling lost can actually be a good thing?
We’ve all struggled at one time or another with not knowing who we are, what we really want, or where we’re headed. The problem is that we live in a world that values control, certainty and having all the answers.
All feelings arise to give you intel about yourself and your life and feeling lost is one of our most powerful messengers. It’s a tap on the shoulder saying…’there is more for you out there’.
Our tendency is to turn away from the discomfort of feeling lost by filling our lives with distractions…
- Overscheduling
- Work/social commitments
- Exercise
- Shopping
- Doom scrolling
- Cleaning/organising/DIY
- Fixing other people’s problems
- Binge watching TV
We often judge ourselves harshly when we feel lost and think there must be something wrong with us. But feeling lost is actually an important and valuable experience because it is an opportunity to rekindle your curiosity so you can make meaningful change in your life.
Questions to ask yourself if you’re feeling lost:
- What am I passionate about?
- What do I want more of/less of in my life?
- Do I just need a break from it all?
- What am I curious about?
- What one thing would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail?
- What brings me joy?
- Am I comparing myself to others?
- Where do I feel stuck in my life?
- Can I speak to my family/friends about how I’m feeling?
